Happy Halloween!

Costume Safety Tips

  • Look for costumes and accessories that are flame-resistant
  • Pick costumes that are brightly coloured and/or add reflective tape
  • Avoid bagging costumes that could be a tripping hazard
  • Do a spot test with make-up or face paint to check for allergic reactions
  • Choose costumes that fit well and can be worn over warm clothing


  • Keep candles, matches and lighters out of reach of children
  • Keep jack-o-lanterns away from curtains and other flammable objects, do not leave unattended. If possible use a flashlight or battery-powered tealight. 
  • Make sure your doorway and walkways are well lit
  • Remove objects around the outside of your house that could cause children to trip or fall.

Trick or Treating

  • Use a flashlight to stay visible
  • Stay in well-lit areas and only visit homes that have their outside lights turned on
  • Take care when crossing the street, look both ways and only cross at corners when no cars are coming
  • Go trick or treating with an adult in til old enough and then go with friends or a group
  • Have an adult look over any treats before eating them
  • Drive slow and keep an eye out for kids crossing
