[ARCHIVED] Beaumont, Edmonton, Leduc County set a path forward for collaboration

The City of Beaumont, City of Edmonton and Leduc County are pleased to announce the approval of the Intermunicipal Planning Framework (Framework) through a memorandum of agreement.

This Framework sets the course for the next 50 years with a unified sub-regional vision for land use, transportation, water, wastewater and stormwater servicing across the shared municipal boundaries of the City of Beaumont, City of Edmonton and Leduc County. An intermunicipal governance model has been established as part of the Framework which will aid in providing for continued intermunicipal cooperation and more opportunities to consider cost-sharing to achieve greater efficiencies for infrastructure servicing.

“This final step of approving the Framework sets our region up for success through collaborative planning,” says City of Beaumont Mayor John Stewart. “Our municipalities’ interconnected relationship will allow our communities to better plan for the future, benefiting our current and future residents.”

In 2018, the three municipalities committed to collaborative planning along their shared municipal boundaries, through the development of an Intermunicipal Planning Framework.

"As we continue to grow, greater collaboration in the region will be increasingly needed," said City of Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson. "I’m happy to see this come to fruition. This framework provides yet another avenue for us to continue to work together, and plan together, for years to come."

The Framework strengthens the three municipalities’ intermunicipal relationship, and confirms the Intermunicipal Planning Framework Agreement to uphold collaboration and bring an enhanced level of value to residents and taxpayers.

“We know that working together is the best way to grow as a cohesive Edmonton Metropolitan Region,” said Leduc County Mayor Tanni Doblanko. “We are happy to collaborate with our municipal partners at the cities of Beaumont and Edmonton to craft a vision for the future along our shared boundaries.”

As the area develops, implementation of the Framework, as well as public engagement activities, will inform future statutory planning, including municipal development plans, area structure plans and area redevelopment plans.
