[ARCHIVED] City of Beaumont and partners receive $75,000 to develop affordable housing solution

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) announced today that the City of Beaumont has been awarded $75,000 in incubation funding to create an affordable housing proposal and further the goals laid out in Beaumont’s Affordable Housing Strategy.

CMHC’s Housing Supply Challenge invites citizens, stakeholders, and experts to propose solutions to the barriers to new housing supply. Several partner organizations have agreed to assist City of Beaumont staff with creating this proposal, including housing consultants and local housing provider SHS Consulting, Urban Matters CCC and Leduc Regional Housing Foundation.

The City and its partners will use the funding to create a proposal for a toolkit that identifies opportunities for developing new affordable housing in the community. The toolkit would help define the types of housing most in demand, the best locations in the community, and provide a clear and comprehensive process for engaging the public.

“Beaumont is a warm, welcoming community and we’re working to be an even more accessible place to live for people from all walks of life,” says Mayor Bill Daneluik. “The incubation funding from the Housing Supply Challenge will help the City identity and act on affordable housing development opportunities so that residents with a wide range of ages, family sizes, occupations, and income levels can find a home here.”

The City of Beaumont and its partners will submit the completed proposal to the CMHC in spring 2022 for consideration in the next round of funding.

As the city grows, so does the need for a diversity of housing types, including affordable housing. An estimated 500 Beaumont households (9 per cent of the city’s households) spend more than 30 per cent of their incomes on housing, which CMHC considers unaffordable.
