1. How do I know what level my child will be in?

Follow the Transition Chart or reach out to the Aquatics Team at aquatic.programs@beaumont.ab.ca.

2. When will the transition be happening?

The Fall 2022 & Winter 2023 programming sessions are going to be entirely LSS lessons When the program guide is released in late July aquatic programming will be the new LSS lessons. 

3. What are the differences between the Red Cross lessons and Lifesaving Society lessons?

Names of levels, the number of levels, and with some classes, the length may be a bit different as well.  Skills, strokes, and safety pieces will be very similar if not the same as the Red Cross Swim Lessons.

4. Are there any changes to class length?

All Swimmer classes are now 45 minutes while all other class lengths are the same as before.

5. Are private lessons and semi-private lessons still going to be available?

Yes, and we are looking forward to adding privates for the Swim Abilities (Adapted) program too.

6. What are the costs for Lifesaving Society lessons?

• Parent and Tot & Preschool: $52.00 (30 minute classes) *8 classes per set 
• Swimmer classes: $56.00 (45 minute classes) *8 classes per set
• Adult Swimmer: $65.00 (45 minute classes) *8 classes per set
• Swim Abilities: $164.00 (45 minute classes) *8 classes per set
• Private Lesson: $32.00 (30 minute class)
• Semi-Private Lesson: $24.00 (per person per class) *Must have 2 people in the class
• Swim Abilities Private Lesson: $21.00

7. Will there still be report cards for Lifesaving Society lessons?

There are Lifesaving Society report cards and ribbons for each level.

8. What are the age ranges for the Lifesaving Society levels?

• Parent and Tot 1 (4-12 months)
• Parent and Tot 2 (12 – 24 months)
• Parent and Tot 3 (2 – 3 years) 
• Preschool Levels 1 – 5 (3-5 years) 
• Swimmer Levels 1 – 6 (5-12 years) 
• Adult Swimmer (13+ years) 
• Swim Abilities (3+ years)

9. What do we do with the current Red Cross report cards we have?

They will be wonderful keepsakes and references for where your child is at in order to help discern what LSS level to register in.

10. Where can I find information about what will be taught in Lifesaving Society Swim for Life lessons?

All Parent & Tot, Preschool, and Swimmer worksheets will be included in the information available for the public to reference for what skills will be learned and worked on in LSS Swim for Life Lessons.

11. Why is the transition happening?

Sadly, the Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety and Lifeguarding programs will no longer be available anywhere as of January 1, 2023. We appreciate their wonderful program and the joy and safety it has brought the community over the years.

The Lifesaving Society Swimming and Lifeguarding programs are wonderful to be a part of and we are looking forward to the support and development from here on out in ensuring that everyone’s transition to their programs is meaningful and beneficial for all.

12. Is the LSS swim program of the same quality as the Red Cross program?

Lifesaving Society and the Red Cross are currently the top two recognized Swimming and Water Safety programs and lifeguarding governing bodies in Canada. The Lifesaving Society will continue to be a leader in helping all participants become successful swimmers, instructors, and lifeguards.

13. Is there still a focus to work on proper skills and water safety in Lifesaving Society lessons or is it all just for the purpose of building up to be a lifeguard and instructor?

Regardless of the goal for all participant types, the focus will continue to be on the swimmer's needs and wants in the swimming and water safety realm. Whether the goal is swimming and water safety, fitness, instructor and lifeguard development, or just day-to-day comfort and ability in various bodies of water.

14. Is there going to still be something in Lifesaving Society lessons for my child who has finished Swim Kids 10 in Red Cross?

We are very excited to consistently be offering Bronze Star courses for those participants that want to go onward in the Lifesaving Society Swim for Life program after completing Swimmer 6 or previously having completed Red Cross Swim Kids 8/9/10.

We are also very excited to be offering Junior Lifeguard Club which will be available for all participants 8 years old and older and have the minimum swimming ability of Swimmer 4 (Equivalent to Swim Kids 4).

15. Are there still going to be Adult/Teen swimming lessons?

Adult Swimmer is the equivalent LSS program for Adults & Teens looking for swimming lessons whether they be beginners or looking to build their strokes and endurance for fitness purposes. Junior Lifeguard Club also includes Seniors (Ages 13-17 years old) and Masters (18+ years old) groups. 

16. Will there still be Adapted Lessons? Is the process still the same for registering for them if so?

Swim Abilities is the LSS version of Adapted lessons. The inquiry and registration process remains the same and will need to be done through the aquatic programs' email. After inquiring, the Aquatic Programs Team will send the participation information sheet as well as the time and course codes available for the program.
