12, an adaption of the courtroom drama 12 Angry Men, is directed by Beaumont’s own Ilona Ryder and features 12 local actors from the Barnstormers Solidarity, the local 50+ readers theatre group. The performance is sponsored by the Beaumont Performance Arts Collective.
The play contemplates the huge responsibility of 12 ordinary people as they consider the guilt or innocence of a young girl accused of murdering her father. The 12 jurors bring their own histories, prejudices, and biases to the jury room as they work through this life or death decision of convicting the accused, an inner-city teen to life in prison without parole...ever. As the 12 try to reach a unanimous decision while sequestered in a room, one juror casts considerable doubt on elements of the case. Personal issues soon rise to the surface, and conflict threatens to derail the delicate process that will decide one girl's fate.
This play in 2021, works through the issues at hand in a very human way. It was originally written for men only, in a time before women could not serve jury duty. Under the direction of Ilona Ryder, the cast includes both men and women.
Guilty or not guilty. The question is easy, or is it?
