To facilitate repairs on the water main serving Beaumont, the City is implementing a mandatory water ban for municipal operations and voluntary restrictions for residents to reduce non-essential water use, effective July 22, 2024.

Recreational Vehicle Parking & Storage

Recreational vehicle (RV) owners are responsible for following the City’s bylaws when parking or storing their RV within Beaumont. Bylaws provide common sense rules for public safety and the consideration of neighbours.

Improperly parked RVs can obstruct sidewalks, making it difficult or unsafe for residents to get around their neighbourhood. They can also create a traffic hazard by blocking drivers’ sightlines or making it difficult to clear roads during the winter.

Residents of Beaumont must ensure the storage of their RV follows the city’s Land Use Bylaw and the Traffic Safety Bylaw. These bylaws establish:

  • how an RV can be parked on your property; and
  • how an RV can be parked on the street.

What kinds of vehicles do these bylaws cover?

These bylaws apply to RVs, campers, trailers, and off-highway vehicles. (Please note that off-highway vehicles, e.g. quads, snowmobiles, and dirt bikes, cannot be parked on the street.)

What are the rules for parking an RV or trailer on my property?

An RV or trailer can be parked on private property when it is:

  • On an approved hard-surfaced driveway. The vehicle must not block the sidewalk when parked on the driveway.
  • On an approved hard-surfaced parking pad. Any secondary parking access requires a development permit from the City. Contact Permit Services at development@beaumont.ab.ca for more information.
  • An RV or trailer cannot be parked on grass or gravel on your property.
What are the rules for parking an RV or trailer on the street?

An RV can be parked on the street:

  • For up to 72 hours. After that, it must be parked appropriately off the street or taken outside the city (e.g., camping or to a storage lot) for at least 48 hours.
  • In front of your home. If you must park on the street somewhere else, you need the adjacent property owner’s permission.

An RV cannot be parked on the street:

  • In a designated no parking area.
  • Within 5 metres of a crosswalk or intersection and 1.5 metres from alleys or another person’s driveway.
  • If it is occupied.

Trailers must be attached to a vehicle if parked on the street.

Where can I store my RV if I don’t have room on my driveway or am unable to have an approved parking pad?

You can park your RV on your lot when it is being actively loaded or unloaded, but you must store it elsewhere if it cannot be parked according to the City’s bylaws. There are several RV storage facilities around Beaumont where your RV can be stored legally for extended periods.

Why does the City limit driveways and additional parking pads?

Too many hard surfaces in a neighbourhood can cause flooding because water won’t drain naturally into the ground. Additionally, hard surfaces become heat islands in hot weather and can create higher temperatures in urban areas.

Driveway sizes are limited to leave room for municipal infrastructure such as street lights and fire hydrants. Wide driveways also leave less room for street parking and less space for shovelled snow in the winter.

Additional or expanded access points to a parking pad on your property may create conflicts with traffic and pedestrian safety, depending on their location. Permits are required for additional access. Contact development@beaumont.ab.ca for more information.
