Curb Extensions

The City of Beaumont is enhancing pedestrian safety by installing temporary curb extensions.

Why curb extensions?

The City of Beaumont is enhancing pedestrian safety by installing temporary curb extensions at 56A Street/Rue Montalet and 56A Street/55 Avenue. These curb extensions will be in place from June 21 to October 18, 2024.

Curb extensions promote safety for pedestrians and motorists by:

  • Significantly reducing the distance pedestrians need to cross at intersections, minimizing the time spent near moving vehicles and improving overall pedestrian safety.
  • Creating clear space around crosswalks, improving visibility for pedestrians and vehicles.
  • Encouraging drivers to slow down and make complete turns, staying in the correct lane, and reducing the likelihood and severity of collisions.

What is a temporary curb extension?

Temporary curb extensions are traffic calming measures used in urban planning and street design. They involve extending the sidewalk into the street temporarily, typically using materials like concrete barriers and bollards. This extension narrows the roadway, reducing the crossing distance for pedestrians and slowing down vehicular traffic.

How can I provide my feedback?

In fall 2024, residents can provide feedback through a survey to help us refine these safety features. Stay tuned for updates on this page.
