Beaumont Receives Funding to Bridge Intergenerational Gaps

The City of Beaumont is tackling social isolation among seniors with the support of a $20,000 grant from the Government of Canada.

Funding, in part from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, will support an intergenerational project with monthly events that bring children and seniors together to share stories and experiences over the next year. The project’s goal is to transform the way the generations interact and think about one another.

“Today’s seniors are living longer and are more active, but too many still suffer from social isolation,” said Kim Williston, Director of Community and Social Development. “Thanks to the New Horizons for Seniors Program, the City of Beaumont will make a significant difference in the lives of seniors in our community.” 

A committee of residents from different generations is now established and will plan the monthly events and help guide the project. Upon conclusion of the project, a Legacy Book will be created and distributed to all participants and the Bibliothèque de Beaumont Library. Having the book available to the community at the library will allow future generations to share in the experiences and learnings of the project.

“This project will have positive effects on the mental well-being of all who participate and help create a healthier community for years to come,” said Williston. “Research strongly emphasizes that shared experiences of joy and happiness are contagious, and we are hopeful our participants’ connections will be sustainable.” 

“Projects like these not only encourage seniors to stay involved in their community, but also increase their social participation and inclusion. This is key to enhancing their well-being and quality of life,” said Canada’s Minister of Seniors Kamal Khera. “I am proud to support the City of Beaumont through the New Horizons for Seniors Program. This project will create meaningful connections between members of the community and encourage seniors to share their knowledge, skills and experiences for the benefit of younger generations.”

New Horizons for Seniors Program is a federal grants and contributions program to support projects that help improve the well-being of seniors and foster social inclusion and engagement in their communities.
