Posted on: June 27, 2023 A byelection for City Council will be required to fill a vacant seat left by the resignation of a Council member this week. Coun. René Tessier provided notice on June 27 that he was stepping down effective immediately, noting that he was moving from Beaumont with his family and will no longer be eligible to sit on Council. “I want to thank the residents of Beaumont for entrusting me with the responsibility to help lead the direction of the city. Serving the community has been an incredibly rewarding experience,” said Tessier. “This was a very difficult decision, but we made it in the best interests of our family. I will still have deep roots in Beaumont and wish the Mayor, Council, and everyone in the community much success.” Under the Municipal Government Act, a byelection must be held for the vacant seat within 120 days of the resignation notice. Administration will present a report recommending a byelection date to Council at its July 11 meeting. Candidate and byelection details, including the nomination period, advance vote dates, and the polling location, will be posted to the City’s website once a date is set. “René has been a dedicated and valued member of City Council and we’re sad to see him leave,” said Mayor Bill Daneliuk. “I’m a parent myself, so I understand that family must come first.
