Alberta is in a drought, and we need your help.

Due to reduced rainfall and higher temperatures throughout 2023, water basins in our province have reached critically low levels.

How does this impact us?

  • Strain on water supply: Droughts may lead to water shortages within municipalities that can result in water restrictions to maintain adequate water supply for essential services like drinking and firefighting.
  • Wildfire risk: Drought conditions increase the risk of wildfires, which can have devastating impacts on our environment and communities.
  • Ecosystem effects: Droughts can lead to reduced biodiversity, habitat loss, and drying up of wetlands and rivers. This can have cascading effects on wildlife, including fish populations and lead to long-term ecological damage.
  • Economic losses: Drought-related crop failures and reduced yields can result in major economic losses for agriculture, forestry, and other related industries.

Potential water restrictions

During times of drought, our top priority is to ensure adequate water supply for essential services like:

  • Drinking water supply
  • Firefighting

To maintain this water supply, the city may implement restrictions on non-essential water usage throughout the coming months. To reduce the likelihood of such measures, we need your help in conserving water.

Water conservation starts at home. Even small changes to water usage habits can make a big impact. Learn how you can play your part in water conservation
