Beaumont’s Good Neighbour program recognizes individuals who contribute to a safe, connected and friendly community. We’re excited to showcase our latest award recipients– Mike and Edith Spencer! This is what their neighbour, Gina, had to say about their positive effect on the neighbourhood.

For the past eight years, Mike and Edith have brought our community together by hosting a free annual block party at their home, complete with a band. Their place, known as “Mike’s Bar and Grill,” is the heart of the neighbourhood—every Edmonton Elks and Oilers game, their garage is open, and neighbours gather on the driveway to cheer on their teams.

They also host an annual corn roast, where everyone comes together for a potluck, and even former neighbours return to be part of the tradition. They have truly made our street feel special—a place where we look out for each other’s kids and build lasting friendships.

Beyond the gatherings, Mike and Edith are always there for the community. They make salsa to share with the street, lend a helping hand whenever needed, and go out of their way to bring people together. When my daughter had back surgery, Mike rallied the neighbours to deliver a care package for her. Even during COVID, we found ways to stay connected, socially distancing in his driveway.

Our neighbourhood wouldn’t be the same without Mike and Edith. Their generosity, kindness, and community spirit deserve to be recognized.”
