Mayor statement Posted on: March 21, 2025 Statement from Mayor Bill Daneluik regarding International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination “Today, Beaumont joins communities around the world observing the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. This day commemorates the tragic events of March 21, 1960, when 69 peaceful demonstrators were killed in Sharpeville, South Africa for protesting apartheid laws, and serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts needed to address racism and promote equity and justice. Racial discrimination remains a prevalent issue that affects individuals and communities across the globe. It manifests in various forms, from overt acts of hate to subtle systemic biases that hinder equal opportunities. Recognizing and addressing these injustices is essential in our effort to build a fair and just society. In Beaumont, we are committed to fostering a community where every individual feels valued, respected, and included. Our Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion framework sets the foundation for this commitment and guides our efforts for creating policies and initiatives that promote equity and celebrate the rich diversity of our residents. I encourage all Beaumont residents to reflect on the importance of fighting racial discrimination and actively participating in building an inclusive community. For more information on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and ways to get involved, please visit the United Nations’ official page.”
