February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate the vital contributions of Black Canadians to our economic, social, and cultural richness. It is also a time to reflect on the historical and ongoing challenges faced by Black individuals, as well as their enduring resilience and strength that continue to shape our society today.

The history of Black Albertans is one of courage and perseverance. From the early pioneers who settled in Amber Valley, Campsie, and other communities across the Prairies, to the Black residents and families who are shaping our city today, these stories reflect a legacy of determination and a commitment to building stronger, more inclusive communities.

In Beaumont, we take pride in celebrating the diversity of our residents and remain committed to advancing equity, inclusion, and belonging. We are proud to support organizations like the Black Impact Alliance Foundation of Beaumont that uplift Black culture and ensure the voices of Black individuals and families are celebrated in our city.

This month, I encourage everyone to learn more about the experiences of Black individuals in Alberta, reflect on the history of their contributions, and explore ways we can all contribute to a more inclusive future. Whether it’s attending a local event, reading about Alberta’s Black pioneers, or having meaningful conversations with Black friends, neighbours, and community members, these actions deepen our understanding and allow us to celebrate the rich history that has shaped the society we live in today.
