This June, Beaumont will roll out proposed bylaw changes aimed at easing parking congestion and reducing the number of additional dwelling units per property in response to concerns raised by residents.

“Many residents have a few vehicles, or work truck or an RV, which can make our residential areas a bit crowded. We can improve new residential developments, with some adjustments and solutions that aim to create a more connected and inclusive community for all Beaumont residents,” said Kendra Raymond, Director of Planning and Development. “These proposed amendments reflect our commitment to smart, sustainable growth while maintaining the unique character of our city.”

Specifically, Administration recommends the following key changes to the Land Use Bylaw:

•    ensuring developers illustrate the location of driveways on tentative subdivision plan applications.

•    prohibiting opposing front residentials driveways where homes have a single side yard and where houses have a lane.

•    reducing the number of additional dwelling units from three to two per property.

The proposed amendments would support the City’s objectives for gentle density and accommodating the needs of a growing and diverse community. Making several minor amendments to the bylaw will produce the greatest overall benefit to the community while creating the least impact for residents, builders, and developers, while keeping housing costs low.

A public hearing on the proposed amendments is scheduled on July 23, 2024. These amendments are a result of extensive public engagement in the Spring of 2022, when residents, business owners, developers, builders, and other stakeholders shared ideas, feedback, and insights about how to continue to maintain livable neighborhoods in Beaumont.
