Winter activities like hockey, skating, and ice fishing are a big part of Canadian life, but stormwater ponds are not safe for these fun outings. While the ice may look solid, it’s highly unpredictable and can be extremely dangerous.

Beaumont has several stormwater ponds that might appear frozen, but these are not your typical ponds or lakes. Stormwater ponds are part of a system designed to manage snowmelt and storm runoff. The water constantly moves underneath the surface, and runoff contaminants affect the ice, making it unstable and unsafe for any kind of recreational use.

Always follow posted signs near water bodies and avoid venturing onto stormwater ponds. If someone needs help on the ice, do not attempt a rescue yourself. Call 911 right away—firefighters are trained to handle ice rescues safely. If you can reach the person from the shore, lie flat and use a long pole or branch to help.

Remember, stormwater ponds are not meant for skating or playing. Stick to approved ice surfaces and enjoy winter safely!
