Posted on: April 4, 2023 Updated traffic rules coming into effect June 1 will ensure Beaumont continues to be a safe, accessible place for residents, business owners and visitors, no matter how they travel around the community. The updated Traffic Safety Bylaw, approved by Council on January 24, consolidates, clarifies, and simplifies existing regulations about issues like parking and speeding while addressing common concerns from residents, such as truck and dangerous goods routes, RV parking, playground zones, and vehicle idling. “Traffic safety is a major priority for our city and contributes to our excellent quality of life,” said Mayor Bill Daneluik. “Having transparent, updated road safety rules addresses many of the issues we hear from residents, and helps protect the things that our residents value about Beaumont, such as its livability.” The new bylaw repeals and replaces three previous bylaws: the Idle-Free Bylaw, Heavy Vehicle and Dangerous Goods Bylaw, and the previous Traffic Safety Bylaw. Input received from public engagement in September and October 2022 helped guide the development of the bylaw. Key changes include: Restrictions on when and where RVs can be parked so they don’t interfere with neighbours and other residents. Consolidating school zones with playground zones to reduce confusion about when reduced speed limits are in effect. Updates to rules for heavy vehicles within city limits. “Beaumont is committed to accountable, transparent, evidence-based rules for traffic safety to help keep everyone in the community safe,” says Jay Melvin, Director, Protective Services. City of Beaumont Community Peace Officers generally use education in response to bylaw complaints and provide a warning for first instances.
