Effective January 1, 2024, Albertans must report a collision to the police if the estimated property damage exceeds $5,000, marking an increase from the $2,000 threshold.

The $5,000 figure intends to decrease the number of reports for minor collisions, freeing up law enforcement resources. It also aligns more closely with the escalating costs of auto repairs. Collisions resulting in injuries or deaths must be reported, regardless of repair costs.
